Courses

A wide variety of individual courses are offered in theology and philosophy, with perspectives on literature, art, history, ecclesial architecture, music and film.

Courses are offered in both Swedish and English, either as local courses with weekly meetings mainly at The Newman Institute’s location in Uppsala, or as half-distance, implying distance teaching plus two compulsory whole-day meetings in place. The dates of the whole-day meetings are to be found on the course’s page and are also communicated by the lecturer before the course starts.

Grading Scale

The Newman Institute uses a seven-point grading scale from A to F, related to the learning objectives of the course which are defined in the syllabus.  The definition of the single grades is the following:

A Excellent – outstanding performance with only minor errors

B Very good – above the average standard but with some errors

C Good – generally sound work with a number of notable errors

D Satisfactory – fair but with significant shortcomings

E Sufficient – performance meets the minimum criteria

Fx Fail – some work required before the credit can be awarded

F Fail – considerable future work is required

The Academic Year

The Swedish academic year is divided into two terms starting with the autumn term (from the end of August until the second week of January) and followed by the spring term (from the third week of January until the first week of June).

At The Newman Institute each term is split into two modules, and most of the courses are given according to this division in four modules per year. There are no formal breaks, but the Christmas week and the Holy week are normally lecture-free.

Application for single courses is handled through the national authority for higher education in Sweden: universityadmissions.se (in English) or antagning.se (in Swedish).
